
100th Missile Defense Brigade
Location: Colorado Spring, CO
Defending the homeland is historically the mission of the National Guard, and the 100th MD Brigade is a Colorado National Guard unit. The 100th was stood up by presidential decree in 2003, at an accelerated rate after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The 100th is assigned to USASMDC/ARSTRAT and falls under the operational control of Northern Command for homeland defense. Gen. Victor E. Renuart, Jr. commander of NORTHCOM and North American Aerospace Defense Command.

49th Missile Defense Battalion
Location: Fort Greely, Alaska
The 49th Missile Defense Battalion, a ground-based midcourse defense unit is stationed in this remote post, about 100 miles southeast of Fairbanks. Activated on January 22, 2004, this battalion will provide operational control and security over ground-based interceptors located in Alaska to protect the nation from limited ballistic missile attacks. Alaska National Guard Soldiers will man the battalion as part of their homeland defense mission.
This is the first unit of its kind, and forms part of the 100th Missile Defense Brigade (Ground-based Midcourse Defense) headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The battalion, which at full-authorized strength will number 110 soldiers, will provide operational control and security over ground-based interceptors located in Alaska.
